Ionic Materials is developing innovative polymer materials and processes based on liquid crystal polymers for an increasing number of applications in the microelectronics, telecom and lightweight structural components markets. We are seeking an enthusiastic, self-motivated Manufacturing Process Engineer with strong polymer film manufacturing and supplier management experience. The position will provide opportunities to collaborate with highly-talented people and the autonomy to complete tasks with minimal supervision in an innovative, scientific environment creating breakthrough new products.
The main responsibility is to work with material scientists on new formulations and develop processes for scale-up to high volume manufacturing, both internal and external execution. Some travel is required to engage with suppliers/partners who will be producing our custom materials per our specification. The engineer must be able to design, execute, record, format, analyze, conclude, plan and present all technical aspects of a new product introduction and manage internal and external resources to assure a high quality repeatable process. The engineer should also have the ability to operate and maintain all of the equipment resources in the Liquid Crystal Polymers (LCP) manufacturing area at Ionic materials.
- B.S. or M.S. Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering or equivalent with 5-7 years manufacturing process-engineering experience.
- Experience working with suppliers/partners for producing high quality repeatable specialty polymers or related materials.
ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The ideal candidate for the position must be hands-on and must have strong technical experience with manufacturing process engineering and supplier management, as well as a good understanding of process and material controls and technical tools used to troubleshoot and solve problems independently. Experience with compounding and film extrusion processes are desired. The individual will work with a group of scientists and engineers in a team-oriented, interdisciplinary environment. The individual must have strong interpersonal and organizational skills and contribute to work in a safe and respectful environment. Responsibilities also include rheological, mechanical and electrical properties characterization of extruded products. Experience in computer aided design such as Solid Works or AutoCad is a plus.
- Work with material scientists on new LCP formulations and develop film processes for both internal and external execution.
- Provide film manufacturing process engineering expertise for prototype and production work at Ionic Materials LCP manufacturing area.
- Develop and execute process capability studies to characterize manufacturing processes and develop associated specification resulting in Cpk’s of 1.3 or higher.
- Create incoming inspection material specifications.
- Manage supplier relationships; provide specifications, technical direction as needed. Witness first production runs, review process controls and QC plan; provide technical support in supplier audits.
- Establish outgoing quality control and certificate of analysis procedures. Review and release product shipments.
- Operate, maintain and optimize all processing, injection molding, compounding, and film extrusion equipment in the LCP Group.
- Execute all quality control procedures related to equipment settings and material output.
- Assist in tasks related to EHS requirements for all equipment resources.
